The notes that accompany this short film, recently discovered and released by the house of Lanvin states:
"Exclusive, recently discovered images of Jeanne Lanvin provide a glimpse into the last-minute preparations for a collection in the designer's heyday. Inside 22 Faubourg Saint Honoré, Jeanne is captured making the final adjustments to models ahead of the launch of her "Sorbier", "Tubéreuse" or "Azalée" evening wear designs. A history-infused ballad set against the rhythmical frenzy of busy little hands in the workshop. These are rare pictures."
The clothes in this video are heart-breaking, stunningly beautiful and the glimpse that this film affords us of the double row of woman, seated at a single long table, each meticulously finishing pieces by hand, is a true privilege to see. I have watched and re-watched this a dozen times out of the sheer joy of seeing Ms. Lanvin nod her approval of each dress as a fit models parades before her. I only wish it was hours instead of a mere minute!
It is also an amazing glimpse into the process that it took to produce these pieces back then. No huge factories, no massive machines. Just a room full of women, each specially trained, each lovingly applying each perfect stitch, bead and drape. Something to remember the next time you see a beautifully beaded, early dress or gown!
